When doing Qigong exercise, we use sensation of the body to feel the moving Qi. How we use our mind influences the flow of Qi. Positive thoughts, for example, encourage you to gain back your health and instantaneously direct Qi in optimal ways. Negative thoughts, on the other hand, discourage you from fulfilling your task, block energy, and create sickness.

The Daoist view is that the inner chi field of consciousness is preexisting, and generates all material and bodily forms as well as our psychic structure. If you are a self-convinced materialist, then practicing the Inner Smile is a great way to explore the chi field and challenge or test those limiting beliefs.
For health preservation, practice the exercise once in the morning and once at night. Increase the frequency of practice if it is done to treat disease. Lead a regular life with a moderate sex life. Defecate before practice and dress in loosely fitted clothes. Be natural and quiet, and avoid negative thoughts.
The Taoist sages of ancient China observed that humans often develop energy blockages in their internal organs that result in knots and tangles in their abdomens. These obstructions occur at the center of the body's vital functions and constrict the flow of Chi (energy), our life force. The excessive negative emotions of fear, anger, anxiety, depression and worry cause the most damage. When obstructed, the internal organs store unhealthy energies that can overflow into other bodily systems and surface as negative emotions and sickness. Always in search of an outlet, these negative emotions and toxic energies create a perpetual cycle of negativity and stress. Widespread 'dis-ease' is a result of this sharp decline of a basic sense of cause and effect and a generalized lowering of Chi pressure and feeling of being threatened. This feeling of 'dis-ease' generates negative emotions which are then projected onto people who do not share our views of the world. Anger and intense worry devitalize the whole bioplasmic body so that the body becomes susceptible to all kinds of diseases. Negative emotions cause disturbances in the bioplasmic body so that the whole physical body becomes sick. You may have experienced that after an intense anger or an intense altercation, you felt physically exhausted or became sick. This is because both the bioplasmic and visible physical bodies are drained of prana and became susceptible to infection. In the understanding of diseases, one should take into consideration the external and internal factors or the seen and unseen causes. As a rule, these have accumulated in our bodies and their organs and glands as the sediment of early traumas which we have not been able or willing to give up. We may even have cherished them, as they give us reason to continue living in a state of separation and depression, so that we can justify our state of dis-ease and negative emotions.

Let's briefly consider some thorny issues facing a serious spiritual seeker. Let me say up front that I am not trying to convert anybody to believe anything. I don't really care what your religion or your beliefs are. A Daoist accepts all religions as carrying valuable truth for its believers. There has never been a religious war in China, despite it's invasion by Buddhists and Muslims at different times in history. Daoist process allowed them to simply absorb from other religions anything it felt was useful and in alignment with natural truth.
The xinxing referred to in Falun Gong cannot be fully encompassed by virtue alone. It encompasses much more than virtue. It encompasses many different facets of things, including those of virtue. Virtue is only one manifestation of one's xinxing, so using only virtue to understand the meaning of xinxing is inadequate. Xinxing encompasses how to deal with the two matters of gain and loss. Gain is to gain conformity to the nature of the universe. The nature that comprises the universe is Zhen-Shan-Ren. A cultivator's degree of conformity to the nature of the universe is reflected in the amount of his or her virtue. Loss is to abandon negative thoughts and behaviors, such as greed, the pursuit of personal gain, lust, desire, killing, fighting, theft, robbery, deception, jealousy, etc. If one is to cultivate to high levels, one also needs to break with the pursuit of desires, something inherent in humans. The solar plexus is the clearing house for emotional energy and is situated in between the lower and higher energy centers and in the center of most of the internal organs. All the organs dump their negative emotions here. The internal organs can be cleansed by sweeping the solar plexus, energizing, cleaning and flushing it of sick energy. I look at the tourists in Hawaii where I live. They are all very happy because they have no stress and lots of good, fresh air. In this kind of environment, their attitude will automatically be good. Stress can easily cause us to have a bad attitude and can cause us to be unhappy. It will also cause us to be tired and at the end ill. We may even have a serious illness. When we practise Skating on Ice, with a happy attitude, then it will help release our stress and make our bodies light. A light body is not just about being small or skinny. It is about your mental attitude and also the strength of your bones and the good flow of Qi in the body.
The second thing is to keep your cells free of excess emotions. Develop the skill of acting positively to situations, rather than reacting, especially negatively. Don't allow anyone to make you sad and unhealthy. Some people like to say, You make me angry, or You made me worry. We cannot allow other people to make us so emotional. We do not need to accept the negative emotions that other people try to dump on us. Cellular and psychic boundaries are related. Negative emotions disturb the cells' ability to absorb Chi and to generate the energy necessary for healing. We need all the Chi that we can get. They'll sense that they tend to receive good luck through you and that they can feel comfortable around you even without conversation. The reverse holds true as well. If you are a gloomy person characterized by negative thinking and bad luck, others will feel constrained and stay away.
You can rest, relax the brain in the head by using the 'brain in the gut.' This is the first step. The first thing we learn in the Tao is to forgive and let go. When we keep on remembering past negative emotions, we will stop seeing the truth. To let go of the past is to empty the mind and use the abdominal mind, the awareness and consciousness. Here's an interesting point in the way of the Tao This gut brain can do a lot of simple functions that are similar to the functions of the brain in the head. This is a feeling and awareness type of functioning similar to many of our 'right brain' functions. However, we need to use the brain in the head in order to perform complex functions such as reasoning, making plans and making complex calculations. For rational functions, we need to use the brain in the head for the 'left brain' functions.
Although any number of days of wilderness training is good, three days seems to be the necessary minimum for really emptying the cup and taking one's practice to a new level. We conduct excursions of three, five or seven days in length. We find these particular lengths to be meaningful simply because they remind us of mind-body-spirit the four cardinal directions and the centre point or the five elements and the seven stars of the Big Dipper (the Jade Ladle). The length is not of central importance. What is most important is the long-lasting effects of wilderness Qigong on our practice after we return from an excursion. We find that our practice is invigorated for up to a month after our return. The benefits occur at several levels.
