Qigong treatment has a good effect on high blood pressure. It can effectively induce relaxation effect and dissipate some of the mental strain factors causing high blood pressure. By relaxing, keeping one in quiescence and adjusting the cerebral cortex's function, the function of the vasomotor centre can be adjusted and the elasticity of the small arteries can be improved. 1) Standing Straight Like a Stake Cultivation Exercise
Practise this 3 to 5 times a day, 30 to 60 minutes each time. See Chapter Two for details.
Take a sitting, supine lying or natural standing posture. Breathe naturally. Use the mind to relax the whole body from the top to the bottom—head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, stomach, thighs, legs, feet, soles and then concentrate the mind on Yongquan point. The idea of the exercise is to lead the qi down from the head. Repeat this for ten times. Before finishing the exercise, return the qi to Dantian and keep it there for a while. This exercise relaxes the whole body part by part. Practise 4 to 6 times a day, 20 to 30 minutes each time.

There are many Qigong exercises which have preventive and therapeutic effects on hypertension. The patient can choose to practise according to his or her state of health and disease. Generally speaking, the quiescent exercises should be practised first, and then the motion exercises should be added as auxiliary exercises
