In the fall of1981, I was assigned to teach my first stress-management course at the University of Maryland. My predecessor had taught only sound Western approaches, proven by Western science. He encouraged me to do the same. At a time when saying the word echinacea would garner a response of Gesundheit, I felt that I was rather novel in teaching a holistic approach in what can best be described, at the time, as a very conservative discipline. I work as a bartender. I study acting but I don't work at it. I have some Yoga training and have fasted for two months on pure water. When you have finished the last exercise and your hands are in front of your abdomen, raise them again while inhaling (Figure 3-77), then exhale and extend your arms forward with the palms up (Figure 3-78). Wai Dan Standing Still Meditation

Over the years, various Tai Chi and Chi Kung masters have created many postures for standing still meditation. Generally speaking, they are safer to practice than the Small Circulation exercises because they build up the Chi locally in parts of the body, rather than directly in the Chi vessels. The ultimate goal of this training is to combine the Chi built up by this Wai Dan practice with the Chi built up in the Dan Tien through the Nei Dan practice. Advanced Tai Chi martial artists will do this during their standing meditation. However, as a beginner you should just do the Wai Dan training, keeping your mind calm and letting the Chi build up naturally through the postures. In addition to building up Chi in the shoulders, they also train using the mind to lead the Chi in coordination with the breathing to complete two Chi circuits. The first Chi circuit is a horizontal one in your arms and chest. On the exhale you lead the Chi to the fingertips of both hands, and then across the gap from each hand to the other. You can just engage your imagination and experiment with the basic Qi Dao movements while visualizing an energy ball between your hands. You can also boost your energy sensitivity by using a so-called Tai Chi Ruler or a short stick about one foot long. Move around holding its opposing ends between the centers of your palms, so that your hands are constantly a foot apart. It will be challenging to practice Upper Cut and Downward Press with the Tai Chi Ruler, because it will need to be moving side to side behind your head. For that reason, you may use a belt wrapped around your hands to keep them about one foot apart. After a few weeks or months of this practice, you may find you no longer need any device to aid you in feeling the ball of energy between your hands and sensing the flow of Qi.
