Building a firm faith and confidence

A firm faith and confidence can be transformed into an indefatigable determination, and thus bring about great power. This power may become a motivating force and a reservoir of stamina by which to reach the goal, heightening the wisdom and the courage to overcome difficulties, and enhancing one's ability to withstand both spiritual and physical hardship. It is impossible to succeed in any arduous endeavor without confidence and a firm faith.

This faith contains two implications: the first is believing that physical, mental and spiritual health can be attained through Zhineng Qigong practice; the second is believing that one is capable of becoming an effective practitioner and that one can attain great achievements.

This faith must be rooted deep in one's mind; one cannot undertake a successful practice while maintaining an attitude of mind which is half believing and half doubting. How does one build up such a firm faith and confidence?

a. Deepen one's understanding of Zhineng Qigong.

As explained in the former sections, Zhineng Qigong is not a simple single method or skill; it is a complete body of learning, a profound and advanced science. It has its unique theoretical system, specific methods, objects and aims, as well as its own ranges of research.

Although Zhineng Qigong is completely new to most people, its validity has been and is being proved by millions of practitioners. Every practitioner should avoid worship of and blind faith in chigong, but should seek rather to obtain a complete rational understanding of chigong.

Only when one has a real understanding that Zhineng Qigong is an authentic science can one establish a genuine trust in it. One is then able to see the great power of this faith in one's own practice.

Only when one studies and masters the theories of Zhineng Qigong in depth is it possible to rid oneself of the limitations of general knowledge (including the general knowledge of modern science), and only then is it possible to accept the seemingly miraculous phenomena of chigong as normal, natural and proper.

It is not enough to study theories only; one needs to prove them through one's own practice. Amongst the multitudes of Zhineng Qigong practitioners, what each sees and hears can not only deepen their understanding of these theories, but also helps to build up a power of faith in one's consciousness, which will become an internal motive power during one's practice and application of chigong. One's power of faith is closely related to the levels of one's achievement.

As soon as a firm faith is established, neither doubts nor suspicions will arise, even in the event that one does not completely understand the various extraordinary phenomena that may be experienced. One will conscientiously seek to conform to the principles of practice, and to do what is required; this accords with the spirit of those engaged in various fields of scientific study, who refrain from exhausting themselves in a mad pursuit to comprehend everything, and who instead patiently continue on with their studies in a spirit of acceptance.

For example, when a patient sees a doctor, she will take the medication seriously and conscientiously, according to the doctor's instructions, even if she doesn't know the exact ingredients of the doctor's prescription, its anticipated effects on her, or how these ingredients work. Relatively few people would go out of their way to search for the answers to questions such as which illnesses this medication treats, or how long it will take to cure these illnesses. The reason that patients seldom ask such questions is that medical science is a generally recognized and accepted, and that they believe in their doctors. Nowadays, many people frequently question the effectiveness of chigong practice; in such situations, the key problem is that they believe that chigong is unscientific and untrustworthy. It takes time to change such people's view of chigong.

b. The tempering of one's self through sustained endeavor.

It is easy to have a generic faith in chigong, but a process of consistent effort is needed in order to build up a firm faith. The time and effort needed to see results differ from person to person.

When no effects appear after a period of practice, it constitutes a critical moment in the testing of one's faith. At this time, if one loses confidence and stops one's practice, one will not be able to complete the journey of the remolding of one's body and mind; conversely, if one continues to believe in chigong, remains without doubts, and continues practicing without ceasing, one will achieve what one wishes.

Upon seeing signs of recovery, most patients have been filled with confidence. But, when symptoms returned (most of these being reactions to practice), they have commonly lost confidence and stopped practicing, which spoiled all they had achieved, whereupon the symptoms experienced sometimes worsened.

This is due to the fact that, at the time they undertook their chigong practice, most patients seized upon chigong as their last hope as a means of curing the incurable. A truly scientific faith had not been established in their minds. When they experienced the first effective results they ignored the need of further understanding chigong. Moreover, they were not well prepared for the reactions attendant upon the practice of Zhineng Qigong.

When the symptoms returned, they would succumb to a state of utter bewilderment. They lost their ability of directing the body with the mind, and completely overlooked the evidence of all their former achievements.

At this critical moment, it is of vital importance to hold firm to one's faith and to keep on practicing; in this way, the illness can be eventually eradicated and health finally restored.
